On cold, clear nights across the Nordic landscape, the darkness suddenly comes alive. Curtains of green, violet and white drift silently across the sky, constantly changing yet never repeating themselves. They cannot be predicted with certainty, nor captured exactly as they appear.
For centuries, Nordlys has inspired stories, myths and quiet reflection. Some believed the lights were spirits moving across the heavens. Others saw them as messages from another world. Even today, standing beneath them evokes the same feeling—a reminder that nature still holds mysteries beyond our understanding.
Nordlys was born from that moment.

They appear, dissolve, shift and return in an endless choreography of light. Every display is unique. Every movement exists only once.

Nordlys seeks to preserve one of those moments.

Nordlys is quiet reminder that life’s most extraordinary moments are often unexpected.
The geometry of Nordlys is built around movement. Curved lines rise, intersect and unfold around a calm centre, creating a rhythm that feels alive without becoming chaotic.
Like the aurora itself, the design never appears static. As light passes through the open geometry, subtle shadows emerge and disappear throughout the day, allowing the object to change with its surroundings.
For me, Nordlys became a reminder that not everything needs to be understood to be meaningful.
Its geometry speaks of curiosity, imagination and the quiet humility that comes from witnessing something greater than ourselves.

From Nature to Geometry
Translating movement into stillness.
Every Nordic SNÖ design begins far from the studio.
Ideas are collected while walking through forests, coastlines and open Nordic landscapes. Rather than sketching products, I sketch observations—moments where nature reveals an unexpected rhythm or hidden order.
Nordlys began with a difficult question.
How do you translate movement into something completely still?
Dozens of sketches explored flowing curves, overlapping paths and changing directions before the geometry gradually found its balance. The challenge was never to recreate the aurora itself, but to capture its sense of continuous motion while remaining calm and architectural.
Each line was refined until the geometry felt effortless, as though it had always existed.
Laser cut from carefully selected wood, the finished design allows daylight to complete the composition. As light shifts throughout the day, new shadows appear within the pattern, quietly echoing the ever-changing movement that inspired it.
