SOLHVERV
A Turning Towards Light.
Inspired by the winter solstice, Solhverv marks the quiet turning point when darkness begins to give way to light.
Every winter holds a promise
In the Nordic landscape,
light is never constant.
Through autumn, the days become shorter almost unnoticed. Shadows stretch further across the land, mornings arrive later, and evenings quietly consume the horizon. Then, for a brief moment, winter reaches its deepest point. The winter solstice is often described as the shortest day of the year. Yet its true significance lies not in darkness, but in what follows.
From this day forward, the light returns. Almost imperceptibly at first. A few extra minutes each morning. A brighter afternoon. A longer horizon. Nothing dramatic, yet everything begins to change. Solhverv was born from this quiet transformation. Rather than capturing the sun itself, the design celebrates the moment hope quietly begins.
the
nordic
moment
Nature moves in cycles. So do we.
To understand Solhverv is to understand something fundamental about living in the North.
Unlike many places in the world, the Nordic landscape teaches patience. Seasons are not merely weather; they become part of everyday life. They shape architecture, traditions, rituals and even the way daylight enters our homes.
The winter solstice has been celebrated across Scandinavia for centuries. Long before electric light, it marked survival. It reminded communities that darkness was temporary and that spring was already on its way, even if still hidden beneath frost and snow.
Today, this rhythm remains.
The sun finding its way through the kitchen window once again.
The subtle warmth returning to wooden floors.
The first morning walk where daylight lingers a little longer.
These moments often pass unnoticed, yet together they define the Nordic experience
Solhverv seeks to preserve one of them.
THE SYMBOL
Hope rarely arrives all at once.
There is no hierarchy within the design. No beginning. - No end.Only continuous movement held in perfect stillness. Some choose Solhverv as a reminder that difficult seasons eventually pass.Others see balance, optimism or new beginnings. Its meaning is never fixed.Like the changing light, it evolves with the person who lives with it.Every Nordic SNÖ symbol carries a meaning beyond its form.
The geometry of Solhverv radiates from a calm centre. Every line expands outward with balance and intention, echoing the way light gradually returns across the Nordic landscape after the winter solstice.
Unlike the sudden rise of the sun, the return of light is almost imperceptible. Day by day, the horizon stretches a little further, shadows soften, and the landscape slowly awakens from winter. Solhverv reflects this quiet transformation, reminding us that life’s greatest changes often begin long before we notice them.
Its radial geometry has no beginning and no end. Instead, it suggests continuity, rhythm and the endless cycle of the seasons—a symbol of resilience, hope and the quiet certainty that every winter is followed by spring.
For some, Solhverv marks a new beginning. For others, it becomes a reminder that growth rarely happens all at once, but through small moments that gradually shape who we become.
“For me, Solhverv is a reminder that some of life’s most meaningful changes happen quietly. Living in the Nordic landscape has taught me that beauty often reveals itself slowly, in the return of daylight, the rhythm of the seasons and the subtle moments we rarely stop to notice. Solhverv is my attempt to preserve one of those moments.”

From Nature to Geometry
Every Nordic SNÖ design begins far from the studio.
Ideas are collected while walking through forests, coastlines and open landscapes across the Nordic region. Rather than sketching products, I sketch observations—patterns of snow, reflections on water, branches reaching toward light.
For Solhverv, the challenge was never to illustrate the sun. The challenge was to translate the feeling of returning light into geometry. Countless hand sketches explored rhythm, repetition and balance before the design gradually found its own structure. Each line was refined until nothing felt unnecessary.
The result is intentionally restrained. Architectural in its precision. Organic in its rhythm.
The finished geometry is laser cut from carefully selected wood, allowing light itself to complete the design as it passes through the open spaces. What appears simple is the result of removing everything that did not belong.
